Local Adventures – Eibsee

As the lockdown continues in Europe and we are unable to hang out with friends & family it is becoming more and more important for us to do some fun stuff on the weekends. Last Sunday we were in for a rare treat: walking on the frozen Lake Eibsee.

Lake Eibsee

Lake Eibsee is considered to be one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Germany. You can find it right below Germany’s highest mountain (Zugspitze) just outside of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The views in summer are magical. The water is crystal clear and the colors do resemble those of the waters found in the Caribbean. Winter does not disappoint either – the views are just as stunning.

Frozen world

Temperatures had been really low for almost two weeks. Little did we know that Lake Eibsee was actually frozen to the point that it was safe enough to walk across it. It was a tremendously cold morning but the views made up for the biting air.

Yes, you can walk on water…

The Mpemba Effect

Along the way we ran into a group of people that were having fun with the Mpemba effect – hot water freezes quickly in very cold environments. We got some wicked cool photos from that. Interestingly enough, the excitement lasted just a few minutes as the sun warmed up the air tremendously quick.

Footage

Here is a short video of the morning. All videos taken with the GoPro Hero 9. The photos were taken with the Fuji X-T2 and processed in Lightroom.
